On May 12, 2016, the Annual Mayor’s Literacy Breakfast (Houston) was held at the River Oaks Country Club.  Our Congregation was one of the sponsors and was awarded a plaque for its leadership in the Literacy Initiative. Mayor Sylvester Turner gave a passionate presentation in support of Literacy.  He shared that his uneducated parents wanted their nine children to have the educational opportunities that they did not have.

The “Learner of the Year Award” recipient shared his story of how the Literacy Centers of Houston helped him in his struggles to reach his goal of becoming a math teacher.

Sr. Caroline thanked the Mayor for following through on his campaign promise to fix the pot holes in Houston!  Mayor Turner connected pot holes with how the poor and uneducated struggle with the “pot holes” in their own lives because of lack of educational opportunities.  The Literacy Center is at the forefront of giving the gift of Literacy to the underserved of Houston.
