A few weeks ago, one of Sr. Kevina Keating's work associates gave her some wildflower seeds. She asked me where we could plant them. At first, I could not think of a place where they would be safe from lawnmowers and could spread out in a wildflower blanket. We finally discovered the perfect spot by the S. Wayside gate. In times past, there were trees and shrubs in that area, but they are long gone. For some reason, the grass had never grown back to cover the ground. Since the dirt in that area was very poor, our first order of business was to get new, healthier dirt brought in. You can see the large mound of dirt in the lower right picture (two truckloads to be exact). After that was delivered, with a lot of help from our friends because it was kind of a big job, we scattered the dirt over the area making a new bed. Sr. Kevina ceremoniously planted the first seeds, Bluebonnet seeds. The rest we will plant in a couple of weeks when the risk of a freeze decreases. Since the area is large, we may even "rent out" little plots to other Sister Gardeners for their flowers, herbs, and vegetables. We are happy that we were able to repurpose a small part of our land for bees, birds, butterflies, and humans to enjoy.
