As CCVIs we are consecrated for mission, to reach out to others and help serve humanity. At St. Bakhita Centre we have tried to provide a safe space that alleviates the pains of those who come to us, a space responding to the invitation found in the Gospel of Mark (6:31) “Come away by yourself to a quiet place and rest a while.” St Bakhita Centre is situated in a serene environment in Karen, a suburb of Nairobi, Kenya that offers to the Church the heritage of our charismatic values as expressed in our mission, a gift we share with the world: “Our Lord Jesus Christ suffering in the persons of a multitude of sick and infirm of every kind seeks relief at your hands.”
At the entrance of the Centre, visitors are welcomed by the image of St. Bakhita, who reminds us that “in God’s will there is great peace.” Thus setting the tone, the Centre aims to bring spiritual renewal by offering a serene place in the midst of the hustle and bustle where individuals and groups can hear God’s will and find peace through reflection, seminars, and personal recollection.
The Centre, which has 20 bedrooms, a conference room, a prayer room, a dining space, and a chapel, has been able to meet the needs of both religious and laymen and women. We serve those who come for private retreats, directed retreats, days of recollection or prayer, and rest. We also offer conferencing services for various groups and teams.
The Centre is near numerous houses of formation, churches and institutions, allowing us to host many groups for weekend meetings and recollections. We pray that this ministry will be able to fulfill the will of God through us. As Matt. 28:19 says, the Lord assures us that we are not alone; he is with us in our mission as we reach out to others at St. Bakhita Centre, for we are called to be people who keep hope alive and keep trusting in the Incarnate Word. Praised by the Incarnate Word. Forever.
