We stand with Pope Francis when he reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life. Our deep concern for the environment and its protection is deeply rooted in our history, beginning in 1990 when we began serious deliberations about how to better live in accordance with the needs of the Earth. Catholic Social Teaching insists that we show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationships with all of God’s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions which cannot be ignored.
In light of this, we have taken a corporate stand on Care of Creation and commit to educate ourselves and others on the current environment crisis and to take concrete actions individually and communally to save the Earth.
ECOLOGICAL STEWARDSHIP IN OUR MINISTRIES
In every ministry of the Congregation, we take great care in practicing ecological stewardship by minimizing our consumption of resources, including water, gas, and electricity. At our Motherhouse in Houston and in our communities, ministries, retreat centers and schools across our four global regions, we have implemented extensive recycling and composting programs. We strive to tread lightly on the planet through our daily choices - both personally and communally, intentionally avoiding single-use items, especially plastics, and carefully selecting sustainable food and cleaning products. We know these efforts are but tiny remedies to our hurting planet. However, we trust that the witness of our tender care toward the common home of the human family and all of God's creatures contributes to a better present and a better future. We share these values with our lay associates, employees and visitors, inviting them to support our efforts and embrace these practices while engaging with our ministries and beyond.
